Since 2006 the UK can control EU immigration, but it has not.
The Free Movement Directive 2004/38/EC gave the UK control over immigration, but no Government has every used this Directive.
It is well known that Tony Blair allowed new EU members instant access to the UK after they joined in 2004, other countries used the provisions to delay immigration for up to 7 years. Not the UK.
Immigration has been used as a weapon by groups in Parliament to stir up anti EU feelings, and blame all the things that go wrong in people’s everyday lives, on the EU.
High Court says NO to the “Right to Rent” scheme requirements
Today the the High Court has ruled that the “Right to Rent” scheme which requires landlords to carry out “reasonable enquiries” to check the immigration status of applicants, is incompatible with human rights law.
If the Government had a system that registered all immigrants, then this requirement making landlords responsible for something the Government should be doing would not be necessary.
